Who was Maria Montessori?
She was an Italian physician and educator, the first woman to receive a medical degree in Italy. Born in 1870, she developed her method of education early in this century. She devoted her life to the education of children and was honored and respected throughout the world at the time of her death in 1952.
What is the Montessori method?
An approach to education which emphasizes the potential of the young child, and which develops this potential by means of a unique teaching strategy, utilizing specially trained teachers and special teaching materials. It is a method of teaching that develops the intellect and stability of a child, beginning with the 2 1/2 year old, and continuing through high school.
What is the Montessori concept of discipline?
The Montessori discipline is an “inner discipline” - control which the child develops over his own behavior through his interest in the Montessori materials, positive social orientation, and in caring for both materials and individuals.
What happens to children who transfer from a Montessori school to a public school?
The Montessori child adapts to his environment, wherever he finds himself. Montessori children should be tested if transferred into public school, as they usually test 1 -2 years higher in intellect and total growth. If they transfer between the ages of 6 and 10, they should usually be advanced one year. A great deal depends on the school district and individuals concerned.
